For decades, Casey Wasserman has insisted that he would never enter the traditional entertainment business. Film and TV felt too incestuous — his grandfather, Lew Wasserman, reigned as Hollywood’s power broker from the 1960s to the 1990s — and too financially challenged, he would say. Never say never: Mr. Wasserman, 49, on Monday announced that his sports-centered conglomerate, Wasserman, had finalized a deal to buy Brillstein Entertainment Partners, a Hollywood management firm and content production company. Brillstein represents stars like Brad Pitt, Tiffany Haddish, Adam Sandler, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek and Elizabeth Olsen. The lines have blurred a lot more than I think anyone would have expected even five years ago.”

A year ago, the Venice Film Festival had enough star power to put even celebrity-worshiping Cannes on notice. But without all of those celebrities, can Venice still go viral? That puts Venice in a bind, as it’s regarded as one of the best places for Hollywood to unveil starry awards-season titles. (A low-profile Italian film is opening instead.) And I’ve heard of a few more starry fall films that were earmarked for Venice but opted for the Telluride Film Festival instead, since that event is less driven by the photo ops and news conferences that are no longer feasible in Italy.

"Dune: Part Two" has departed the 2023 box office slate amid dual Hollywood labor strikes that threaten its ability to market to the public. Box office analysts have long anticipated that the "Dune" sequel would ditch its 2023 release date amid the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes. Postponing "Dune: Part Two" might help bolster its box office gains in 2024, but will bite a chunk out of Warner Bros. After the stunning success of "Barbie," and with doubts growing about December's "Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom," "Dune: Part Two" was an important 2023 release for the studio and expected to perform well with audiences. Its predecessor excelled at the box office during the pandemic despite being a day-and-date release on streaming service HBO Max (now just called Max).

Corbis/Getty ImagesScholar Teresia Teaiwa famously critiqued the bikini as instrumental to depoliticizing and concealing the effects of nuclear weapons in the Pacific. Britain and France would later begin their own nuclear weapons programs on Indigenous lands and waters in Australia and French Occupied Polynesia, among others. The US began detonating nuclear bombs at the Nevada Test Site in 1951, garnering nearby Las Vegas the nickname Atomic City. Atomic playboys have aestheticized nuclear weapons as sexy — but still safe — since their very existence. Lewis Strauss oversaw J. Robert Oppenheimer as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Strauss used Oppenheimer's communist sympathies to begin stripping his security clearances. However, Strauss was the first to take serious action about Oppenheimer's Communist accusations. The film reenacts another instance when Strauss feels Oppenheimer slighted him — as Oppenheimer and Albert Einstein, played by Tom Conti, speak by a pond after Strauss offers Oppenheimer a prestigious job at the Institute for Advanced Study. Strauss also began a separate security proceeding with the AEC over Oppenheimer's alleged Communist ties, which resulted in his security clearances being suspended.

Pugh stops during intercourse and picks up a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism’s holiest scriptures, and asks Murphy to read from it. India’s film board gave “Oppenheimer” a U/A rating, which is reserved for movies that contain moderate adult themes and can be watched by children under 12 with parental guidance. In 2020, Netflix (NFLX) received significant backlash in India for a scene in the series “A Suitable Boy” that depicted a Hindu woman and Muslim man kissing at a Hindu temple. Ahead of the release of “Oppenheimer,” Murphy said he read the Bhagvad Gita in preparation. “I thought it was an absolutely beautiful text, very inspiring,” he told Indian film critic Sucharita Tyagi in an interview.

“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s staggering film about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man known as “the father of the atomic bomb,” condenses a titanic shift in consciousness into three haunted hours. The movie is based on “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” the authoritative 2005 biography by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The atomic bomb and what it wrought define Oppenheimer’s legacy and also shape this film. “Oppenheimer” is a great achievement in formal and conceptual terms, and fully absorbing, but Nolan’s filmmaking is, crucially, in service to the history that it relates. The story tracks Oppenheimer — played with feverish intensity by Cillian Murphy — across decades, starting in the 1920s with him as a young adult and continuing until his hair grays.

It would have seemed inconceivable then, but the atomic bomb did fade out of mind. And it’s precisely at this moment that Christopher Nolan is asking audiences to look it soberly in the eye. As the name suggests, Nolan has taken on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific genius and conflicted godfather of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy as godfather of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer in "Oppenheimer." But even if a war involving a nuclear power hadn’t erupted in Europe in 2022, Nolan believes “Oppenheimer” contains crossover anxieties.

With summer movie season at its midpoint, Hollywood typically begins to turn its gaze toward the fall, when a trio of major film festivals acts as the unofficial kickoff to Oscar season. That’s because SAG-AFTRA is prohibiting members from promoting any film while the strike is on, an across-the-board ban that includes interviews, photo calls and red-carpet duties. Without those appearances, festivals will be sapped of the star power that is invaluable to raising a film’s profile. The first event that will probably be affected is the Venice Film Festival, which begins its 80th edition on Aug. 30 with the premiere of the sexy tennis comedy “Challengers,” starring Zendaya. Venice has lately rivaled Cannes for glamour and headlines, so the loss of famous actors would be a big blow.

CNN —The cast of director Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated war-era drama “Oppenheimer” is standing united in the effort to support the SAG-AFTRA strike. Stars of the film appeared on the red carpet of the film’s UK premiere on Thursday before the strike was officially announced, but they ended up walking out of the event “to write their picket signs,” according to Nolan. Addressing the audience inside the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square theater before the screening began, as seen in videos posted to social media, Nolan acknowledged the work of Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and Robert Downey Jr., among other “Oppenheimer” cast members. The strike is set to go into effect at midnight PT Thursday night. “Oppenheimer” is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 21.

‘The Wonder’ Review: Investigating an Irish Miracle

One of the many virtues of “The Wonder,” which includes a sublime performance by Florence Pugh , is the case it makes for itself as a film. Not every story can or should be a movie, despite Hollywood’s insistence otherwise. Some should remain books. Adapted from Emma Donoghue ’s novel and directed by Sebastián Lelio , “The Wonder” is set in the rural Ireland of 1862, a scant dozen years after the Great Hunger. She also comes under the scrutiny of a committee of townsmen, some of whom are ready to proclaim her a saint.
But when she finds herself in a film that can match her talents, as she does in Sebastián Lelio’s “The Wonder,” she’s a marvel. In “The Wonder,” a film of considerable emotional depth that asks much of its actors, the result is perhaps her finest work to date. Left to right: Kíla Lord Cassidy, Tom Burke and Florence Pugh in "The Wonder." LONDON, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Making her new psychological period thriller "The Wonder" was a lesson in reining in her spirit and holding her tongue, British star Florence Pugh says. Pugh plays English nurse Lib who travels to a remote Irish village in 1862 to "watch" a young fasting girl. "For me it's a conversation and a conflict about science versus religion, something that we're dealing with now, something that...it's a tale literally as old as time," Pugh told Reuters at the movie’s London Film Festival premiere on Friday. 1/4 Cast member Florence Pugh and director Sebastian Lelio attend the premiere of 'The Wonder' during the BFI London Film Festival in London, Britain, October 7, 2022. New York CNN Business —It looks like “Don’t Worry Darling” didn’t have that much to worry about. (Warner Bros., like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. The solid box office was propelled by female viewers, who accounted for 66% of the film’s opening weekend totals, according to the studio. Ultimately, “Don’t Worry Darling” did what it was supposed to do, at least in terms of selling tickets. Now, those in Hollywood are wondering if “Don’t Worry Darling” will keep box office momentum going into its second weekend.
CNN —KiKi Layne may not appear much in “Don’t Worry Darling,” but the actress says the experience wasn’t a total bust. “They cut us from most of the movie, but we thriving in real life.”In addition to posting a video and a series of photos from onset of the film, she wrote, “Love you Ari” and included #GotMyCheck #GotMyMan #EverythingHappensforaReason. Layne plays Margaret and Statchel plays Ted in the film, which stirred buzz even before its recent box office-topping premiere weekend. CNN has reached out to a representative for Wilde for comment on Layne’s comments about her reduced role in the film. A source close to the project told CNN that Layne’s role was an important one to the film, adding that “movies are edited in service to the story all the time.”
